Bryant pushes new budgeting method
Under a proposal touted by Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant to reform the state’s budget process, the Legislative Budget Office and the Performance Evaluation and Expenditure and Review committee would be combined and charged with making sure state programs are productive, or else their budgets would suffer.
Bryant was state auditor before becoming lieutenant governor and has long been an advocate of “performance-based budgeting” which is aimed at making agencies prove they are meeting their goals and spending wisely. On Monday, Bryant released a proposal for implementing the process in Mississippi and he traveled across the state to talk about it on Monday and Tuesday.
