The calls are out for Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis’ head. A loss on Saturday to the University of Connecticut dropped the Irish to 6-5, the team’s third straight defeat, with a tough game at Stanford remaining. A promising season, one that looked ripe with BCS bowl possibilities a few weeks ago, has turned sour.
To Notre Dame fans and alumni, the Weis era, now in its fifth season, has shaped up as a flop. That happens when your historical standard is based on Knute Rockne (105-12-4), Frank Leahy (87-11-9) and Ara Parseghian (95-17-4), and 13 national championships dating back to 1919.
Measured against all of Notre Dame’s glorious history, Weis’ 35-25 mark is indeed pretty pedestrian. He said as much after the Connecticut loss, telling reporters that 6-5 “doesn’t cut it.”
Those who cover the team up close think intensity is lacking a bit, if not the game plan.
“He’s got the X’s and O’s down, but there is probably a lack of fire coming out of the tunnel from what I see,” says Tony Krausz of the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Journal Gazette.
