CL – Party swaps pose problems for Dems

Mickey Berry has been elected to Simpson County’s District 4 supervisor’s post three times – each time as a Democrat.

His father had held the same office for several years, also as a Democrat.

But fed up with the national party’s take on fiscal issues – from federal spending to health care, Berry recently decided it was time for a change. He joined six other officials last week in switching to the Republican Party.

“I’m just more of a conservative person,” he said of his decision to switch parties. “It’s just more in line with what I believe.”

The seven Simpson County officials’ switch makes Simpson County – population 27,639 – one of the first rural counties in the state with a Republican-dominated local government.
