When It’s Time to Stop Using the Word ‘Rivalry’
When Texas and Oklahoma meet Saturday in Dallas, fans will be treated to an increasing rarity in college football: a rivalry that’s actually competitive.
Many of the sport’s great grudge matches, in both big and small conferences, have become thoroughly lopsided lately. There are at least 14 rivalries in which one school has beaten the other for the past five years or more, including Ohio State-Michigan, Florida-Tennessee, Florida-Florida State and Virginia-Virginia Tech. There are still others that have seen only a hiccup in one team’s dominance. Both California and Clemson have beaten their chief rivals, Stanford and South Carolina respectively, six of the past seven seasons.
