Mullen mum on QB Relf’s status
Halfway through Mississippi State’s first season under coach Dan Mullen’s new spread offense, an old theme has emerged: uncertainty at quarterback.
It came Sunday with a new twist: Mullen won’t say if Chris Relf, who was suspended for Saturday’s 31-24 loss to Houston at Scott Field, will be available for this week’s game at Middle Tennessee State (3-2).
“That’s an internal issue that we’re dealing with internally,” Mullen said.
Relf, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound sophomore from Montgomery, had emerged as more of a running threat in the two-quarterback system Mullen has used from the start of the season.
But State announced 90 minutes prior to Saturday’s game that he was suspended for a violation of team rules it wouldn’t specify.
