Democrats set to attack Thad Cochran on earmark spending
Dear MoveOn member,
It’s time to call out Senator Cochran for his position on the public health insurance option—and we have the perfect way to do it.
Next week, we’re releasing a series of new reports showing how much in campaign contributions certain senators, including Sen. Cochran, have taken from Big Insurance and HMOs—special interests that are spending nearly $5 million per week to kill real health care reform.
We’ll release the reports at “Whose Side Are You On?” rallies across the country, making it crystal clear that if Sen. Cochran opposes real reform, he’s siding with Big Insurance and HMOs over the American people.
To make sure Sen. Cochran feels the heat, we need a rally in your area—but we don’t yet have anyone signed up to organize one.
Can you host a rally at Sen. Cochran’s office on October 14th? We’ll give you everything you need, including materials and organizing support. You’ll just need to find a location and pick a time for your event.

At the rallies, we’ll release the new report, entitled “Sen. Cochran: Whose Side Are You On?” outside of local Senate offices, and we’ll invite local media to attend. This kind of event is a terrific way to force our senators to explain themselves to their constituents.
In addition, the rallies will feature compelling speakers sharing personal stories: people whose insurance companies refused to pay for their care when they got sick, or small business owners struggling with rising health care costs. (We’ll help you identify great speakers.)
With both the Senate and the House poised to vote on health care in a few short weeks, it’s time to pull out all the stops and make clear to our senators that if they oppose health care reform, we’ll call them on it.
The public option has strong momentum. Four of five congressional committees have included a public option in their legislation, and a strong bloc of progressives in Congress says they will only support a bill with a public option.
But we’ve still got an uphill fight to win this one in the Senate—Big Insurance is spending millions to defeat real reform, and conservative Democrats and Republicans are scuttling reform at every turn.
At this key moment, it’s time to send a clear message: if you oppose the public option, you’re siding with Big Insurance and HMOs over regular Americans. Sen. Cochran, the media, and the American public need to hear that message, along with senators around the country.
