Confidence in 4th-down gambit elevates Belichick as NFL rarity

New England Patriots running back Fred Taylor had never witnessed a head coach go for it on fourth-and-1 from his 24-yard line, leading by six points late in the third quarter of a taut game.
Former NFL head coach Dan Reeves has seen it, though. The then-rookie Denver Broncos head coach gambled on fourth-and-1 late in a game his Broncos barely won. That’s why he was stunned to see Patriots coach Bill Belichick roll the dice against Atlanta.
