Miss. officials eye future sales tax exemptions
Bryant, during a Tuesday news conference at an outdoor mall in Ridgeland, said legislators will be asked next session to amend the law to include other items, particularly hurricane supplies since Mississippi is often in the path of destructive storms.
“I think it’s something that needs to be done. I just think it makes perfect sense. Now, we know hurricanes can affect people in Rankin County and Tishomingo County,” Bryant said referring to the counties in central and northeast Mississippi.
On Friday and Saturday, the state’s 7 percent sales tax will not be charged on most clothing priced under $100. State Sen. Walter Michel had unsuccessfully proposed the tax holiday for nearly a decade, but the state’s strained economy was a factor in legislators finally approving the measure.
“Once everybody sees how popular it is, I think it’s going to be a little easier to get additional legislation passed to include more items,” said Michel, R-Jackson.
