Why the Robot Always Wins

Three great stories stood on the 18th green at the U.S. Open Monday. The players who embodied them had spent four hours listening to the screams and howls of fans urging them to deliver the sort of legendary performance they’d come to see.
But instead of lifting the winner’s trophy, Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes shared the second-place medal and watched their rival, the robotic Lucas Glover, kiss the most coveted hardware.
Welcome to the U.S. Open, the tournament that, more often than not, takes violins and smashes them.
