UF’s athletic budget increases $5.9 million
With universities and athletic programs cutting back because of the economic crisis, the University of Florida’s athletic budget increased 7 percent to $89 million for the 2009-10 school year.
The projected 2009-10 budget, made public Monday, is up $5.9 million from the $83.1 million budget in the 2008-09 school year. To make up for the increased spending, every sport was asked to cut discretionary spending 10 percent.
That $5.9 million spending increase includes contributions made from the University Athletic Association to the university, as well as increasing scholarship costs because of rising tuition, capital improvements, paying out contractual bonuses to coaches and starting up the women’s lacrosse team.
Athletics Director Jeremy Foley said there were certain items that couldn’t be cut, including pension plans and health insurance for employees. Where the UAA felt it could trim, it did.
