Southern Miss bows out with 11-4 loss to UNC
OMAHA, NEB. — The North Carolina Tar Heels banged out a College World Series-record 23 hits en route to an 11-4 victory over Southern Miss today, ending the Golden Eagles’ season.
USM, which upset Georgia Tech and Florida to earn the first CWS bid in school history, finished with a 40-26 record in what was the last game for retiring coach Corky Palmer.
“We never gave up, we just ran into a great club,” Palmer said in an ESPN interview moments after the game.
Palmer said that before the CWS, USM, which was appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight season, was known around the South as a solid program.
