Jackson to pay late mayor’s legal fees
The Jackson City Council tonight voted to pay a portion of the late Mayor Frank Melton’s remaining attorney fees — about $37,500.
Melton’s federal trial ended earlier this year with a hung jury. A retrial had been scheduled, but all charges were dropped in the wake of Melton’s death in May. Melton’s attorney John Reeves said Melton owed $103,500.
He faced civil rights charges related to a warrantless, police-style raid on a Jackson duplex in 2006. Melton called the home a “crack house.”
The council also agreed to try to settle a related civil lawsuit filed by the owner of the duplex, Jennifer Sutton.
