Palmer, Golden Eagles soar into first Super Regional
ATLANTA — In an improbable postseason run, the Southern Miss baseball team has given coach Corky Palmer his first NCAA regional championship in his final season at the helm.
The Golden Eagles put up nine runs in the second inning thanks to two towering home runs by freshman B.A. Vollmuth and held on to beat top-seeded Georgia Tech 12-8 Monday night to win the Atlanta Regional.
First baseman Joey Archer started a three-six double play to end the game, starting a wild celebration which involved a dog pile on the infield. Palmer, grinning from ear to ear, received a Gatorade shower from his players.
