Mitchell – No role in bribery scheme, Ed Peters says
Former Hinds County District Attorney Ed Peters, expected to be a star witness in a corruption trial, is denying allegations in a related lawsuit that he took part in that judicial bribery scheme.
He has been given immunity from prosecution to testify about efforts to influence his one-time protege, Hinds County Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter, who goes on trial Aug. 17 in U.S. District Court in Oxford. The judge has pleaded not guilty to three counts of honest-services mail fraud, one count of conspiracy in a bribery scheme and one count of obstruction of justice involving his actions in a legal-fees dispute before him.
DeLaughter’s attorney, Thomas Durkin of Chicago, said of Peters’ response, “I find it very interesting.”
Peters could not be reached for comment.
