New coach set to transform Mississippi State into bowl contender
AutoZone Liberty Bowl executive director Steve Ehrhart handed new Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen one of the bowl’s caps.
“We’d like to invite you to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl,” laughingly said Ehrhart, whose staff attended Mullen’s appearance at State’s Road Dawgs spring tour stop Monday night at Germantown Centre.
“We accept!” Mullen replied quickly.
Ah, if it was only that simple.
Well, it is and it isn’t. Since 1990, a first-year coach in the SEC has taken over a losing team and immediately gone to a bowl in his first season five times.
