Kemper coal plan quizzed by Hood
A $2 billion coal plant in Kemper County could be delayed while state officials consider legal questions surrounding the project, including whether they have the authority to approve it.
Public Service commissioners have scheduled a May 5 hearing to consider the questions raised by Attorney General Jim Hood. He’s asking the commission to withhold approval of the project until the issues are resolved.
In documents filed with the PSC, Hood asks whether state law allows Mississippi Power Co. to “build, rate base and earn a return on a plant that will manufacture fuel and chemicals – with the ratepayers taking the cost and technology risk on the construction and operation of this manufacturing plant.”
