Hosemann pushes ballot initiative for voter ID
State legislators again failed to pass voter identification legislation, so Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is encouraging Mississippians to sign a petition to put the issue on the 2010 election ballot.
Hosemann, at a Wednesday meeting of the Ocean Springs Rotary Club, said signatures are being gathered now on an initiative to let voters decide whether people should be forced to show identification at the polls.
The issue has become a yearly debate for the state Legislature. The latest voter ID bill died in the Senate in March.
“Voting laws are a tenuous thing,” Hosemann said. “We pushed hard for voter ID. We got about to the 1-yard line. We got clipped in the end.”
