K-State quarterback Freeman’s goal has been to be a first-round pick

It’s July 2006. Kansas State president Jon Wefald and athletic director Tim Weiser are sitting in the student union.

The hire of basketball coach Bob Huggins is just a few months old, and excitement is building for Ron Prince’s first football season as Bill Snyder’s successor. The topic of discussion is the heightened state of recruiting in both programs.
Huggins might land not just several NBA-quality players, but top draft picks, too — prospects who could depart Manhattan after a year or two. A suggestion is made to not overlook Prince’s clout, especially when after two weeks into the job he persuaded heralded Grandview quarterback Josh Freeman to back out of his commitment to Nebraska.
