Ward 1 candidates share views on issues
In the midst of a mutually admiring candidate forum Thursday in northeast Jackson, incumbent Ward 1 Councilman Jeff Weill was asked what separated him from his opponent, Jonathan Jones.
“I’m a little bit taller,” Weill said, drawing laughter from the crowd of about 40 at Broadmeadow United Methodist Church.
Weill and Jones, both Republicans, said they would add police officers without raising taxes by cutting city payroll, increase accountability and accessibility in city government, and bring businesses back to the city by cutting taxes.
The only real difference is Weill, elected 20 months ago to replace former Councilman Ben Allen, said he already is fulfilling those promises, while Jones said he would do more by bringing “new energy” to city government. With so much agreement, Ward 1 resident Kathleen Duke said she has a lot of thinking to do before the May 5 primary.
“I think they both have got good ideas and both have their heart in the right place. I’ll think about both of them when I go to vote,” she said. “It’s good to have two to choose from.”
