Texas Gov. threatens to seceed at tax day protest
Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn’t ruling out the possibility his state may one day secede from the nation.
Speaking to an energetic and angry tea party crowd in Austin Wednesday evening, the Lone Star State governor suggested secession may happen in the future should the federal government not change its fiscal polices.
“There’s a lot of different scenarios,” Perry said. “We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we’re a pretty independent lot to boot.”
A group of Texas House Democrats says Republican Gov. Rick Perry was reckless when he spoke of secession after an anti-tax rally and that he should disavow any talk of withdrawing from the United States.
Democratic Rep. Jim Dunnam of Waco says some people associate talk of secession with racial division and the Civil War. He says such talk is anti-American.
Perry’s office did not immediately respond to the criticism Thursday.
On Wednesday, answering a question from The Associated Press after an anti-tax rally, Perry said he doesn’t think Texas should secede from the union despite some talk about it on the Internet. But he said Americans are getting fed up with Washington and that it’s unknown what that might lead to one day.
