Lawmakers seek millions

Mississippi lawmakers are seeking millions in federal funds for projects in the state, including $400,000 for research to turn sweet potatoes into a biofuel and more than $70 million to build levees and flood barriers.

House lawmakers were required to file their requests for 2010 federal spending – called earmarks – and post them on their Web sites by last Saturday.

The deadline for senators’ requests is expected to come in late April or early May.
