Hoping to take the Pac-10 national

As a former Harvard tennis star and current chief executive of the Women’s Tennis Association, Larry Scott does not have the traditional background to head a major college athletic conference. That, he believes, is exactly why the Pac-10 conference chose him to be its next commissioner.

The 44-year-old Mr. Scott will succeed Tom Hansen on July 1. He will take over the conference at a time when college sports are more profitable than ever. Yet the Pac-10 has often struggled to receive the same kind of national attention as its eastern counterparts. In this year’s NCAA tournament, it was overshadowed by the success of Big East and Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
