2nd eminent domain bill fades in Miss. Legislature

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 1, 2009

Forbes, 3/31/9

Mississippi lawmakers have killed a second attempt this year to restrict eminent domain.

A bill vetoed by Gov. Haley Barbour would’ve limited the government’s ability to take private land for use in private economic development projects.

The House voted last week to override the governor’s veto, but the Senate fell short of the two-thirds majority it needed to complete the process.

A second eminent domain bill was still alive then, and senators sought negotiations on that bill to address some of Barbour’s concerns. The governor said he doesn’t want to limit job creation.

The second bill died late Monday because the House never appointed negotiators.
