Some question Calipari’s temper, recruiting
As a basketball coach and recruiter, John Calipari has received high accolades.
Last year he was named the Naismith National Coach of the Year after leading the Memphis Tigers to the NCAA championship game. And Dick Vitale once called his program-building at the University of Massachusetts — which hadn’t had a winning season in 10 years — “the greatest I’ve ever seen.” But through his 21-year career as a head coach, Calipari, 50, has been dogged by criticism that he often recruits marginal students prone to trouble and that his fiery temper and self-promotion have hurt his reputation.
