Former Gov. Ray Mabus could soon be the Mississippian with the highest-ranking post in the Obama administration with his nomination Friday as secretary of the Navy.
Mabus, 60, who served as governor from 1988-92, was an early and strong supporter of President Obama and campaigned for him throughout the nation last year.
The Harvard Law School graduate, began his political career as an aide to former Gov. William Winter. He was elected state auditor in 1983 and governor in 1987. He was defeated in his bid for re-election by former Gov. Kirk Fordice. He served as ambassador to Saudi Arabia in the Clinton administration.
Mabus is a Navy veteran, having served as an officer in the 1970s aboard the USS Little Rock. As secretary, he would be the highest civilian leader of the Navy.
Mabus is a capable leader who will serve the Navy, the president and the nation well. He also is a good representative for Mississippi in the administration. He should confirmed and congratulated .
