Lawmakers in the Mississippi House agreed today to give themselves the flexibility to return to the state Capitol on May 4 — or earlier — while they try to learn more about how federal stimulus funds will help shore up the budget.
A resolution that cleared the House floor says that lawmakers won’t return if House Speaker Billy McCoy and Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant, who presides over the Senate, agree it’s not necessary.
House Concurrent Resolution 96 now moves to the Senate for approval.
Key legislative leaders have suggested postponing work on the budget until some of the federal rules for spending stimulus money become clearer. Mississippi is expected to receive $2.8 billion, but a lack of clarity on some of the spending requirements is holding up the budgeting process.
