BATON ROUGE — The crowd and the cameras were glued to quarterbacks Jordan Jefferson and Russell Shepard on the first day of spring practice at LSU Thursday, but the noise was coming from the defensive side of the ball.
“Get off the field,” new defensive line coach Brick Haley yelled to a young player.
“The defensive coaches are being a lot more attentive than they were last year,” senior defensive tackle Charles Alexander said after the workout. “They started setting the tempo for the season right off. This is LSU. This is the SEC. Going 7-5 doesn’t quite cut it.”
The Tigers finished 8-5 last season after a convincing Chick-fil-A Bowl victory over No. 14 Georgia Tech, but the Southeastern Conference mark was 3-5.
Haley, formerly of the Chicago Bears and Mississippi State, is one of three new defensive coaches with SEC ties along with defensive coordinator John Chavis, formerly of Tennessee, and secondary coach Ron Cooper, formerly of South Carolina.
