Is it time for historic hire at Alabama?
I was at a function recently and a politician, who happens to be an African-American, walked up to me with purpose on his mind. Immediately, I could sense this exchange would be short and not particularly sweet.
“Finebaum,” he said, “Is Alabama going to hire a black basketball coach?”
Sounds good to me, I said. And he walked away, dismissing me with indifference.
I wasn’t trying to be funny. I was being matter of fact. The idea of Alabama hiring a black head coach is fine with most people. In other words, it’s not a big deal at all until or unless someone makes it a big deal.
