Looks like South Mississippi’s own state Sen. Billy Hewes III, R-Gulfport, is planning a run at lieutenant governor. After briefly denying it last week, when the Sun Herald told him we had an e-mail from his brother saying as much, he admitted his ambitions.
Hewes was, last I checked, “leading” a “poll” on the Magnolia Report on possible candidates for governor-lite that included state Treasurer Tate Reeves, Auditor Stacey Pickering and Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.
Now, this online poll at magnoliareport.com doesn’t claim to be scientific. And it should be noted that Magnolia Report’s owner and founder, Josh Gregory, a Republican wunderkind, top election and advertising operative and lobbyist, has been hired as a campaign consultant by Hewes. This has some people in the other candidates’ camps a little miffed.
But as proof of this poll’s reliability, I proffer this: I was once voted the state’s top political correspondent on Magnolia Report. And all those rumors among the press corps that my mother voted 400 times were just sour grapes.
