Richard “Dickie” Scruggs spent the past four nights in his adopted hometown of Oxford, but it wasn’t a social call.
Once perhaps America’s most famous trial lawyer, the 62-year-old will stand before U.S. District Senior Judge Glen H. Davidson at 1 p.m. today in Aberdeen to learn his fate in a second judicial bribery scandal.
Lafayette Sheriff Buddy East confirmed to the Daily Journal that Scruggs was booked into the Oxford jail about 6 p.m. Friday. He is serving a five-year sentence in a Kentucky federal prison for his part in a 2007 scheme to bribe Circuit Judge Henry Lackey of Calhoun City.
East said he wasn’t aware Scruggs had any visitors.
Friday, sources close to the case said Scruggs is expected to admit his part in a second scheme – this one to bribe Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter of Hinds County.
Both schemes were allegedly aimed at securing a judge’s help with legal-fees lawsuits against Scruggs.
