The state Board of Education would be able to remove superintendents, school board members, administrators and teachers under legislation that passed the Mississippi House on Monday.
The legislation, called the Children’s First Act, has broad-based support from business groups, such as the Mississippi Economic Council, and education advocacy groups.
It passed the House on Monday by a 113-8 vote. Similar legislation is pending in the Senate.
Members of the state Board of Education had identified the legislation as needed to improve a handful of chronically low performing school districts in the state.
“I think this might prevent some school districts from getting to be failing,” said House Education Committee Chairman Cecil Brown, D-Jackson. “The spotlight will be placed on them.”
