The Mississippi House’s Democratic governing coalition is composed of almost an equal division of black and white members.
On some issues, though fewer in recent years, the interests of the black and white members of that governing coalition are not one in the same.
Perhaps there is no current issue where that divergence is more pronounced than voter identification.
Many white Democrats, feeling pressure from constituents who do not understand why voter identification is not required, want to pass a voter ID bill.
On the other hand, black Democrats, who can remember a time when they – or at least their parents – were blocked from voting because of their race, do not want to pass anything that might infringe on that right.
