Mississippi has the legal and moral responsibility for trying to educate 493,302 students in the state’s K-12 public school system in 900 schools in 152 school districts across the state.
Toward those efforts, state taxpayers are investing $2.18 billion in state tax revenues and another $20 million in Public School Building Funds annually.
In addition, local taxpayers put up $1.2 billion and federal taxpayers put up $708 million.
Leading those efforts in the school districts are the district superintendents and about 750 elected or appointed school board members.
That existing local school governance model is ingrained in Mississippi and it generally has worked to the best interests of communities and individual students.
