Legislators learn to rely on the information super-highway

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 5, 2009

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 1/5/9

State Sen. Alan Nunnelee, R-Tupelo, recalls meeting with a group of parents of handicapped children and making a commitment not to vote for a specific piece of legislation.

But when that legislation came to the floor, it was amended in a manner that he believed would be acceptable and agreeable to those parents, so he voted for it.

Not too long after the legislation was approved by a majority of the Senate, including Nunnelee, he received a blistering e-mail from one of the parents expressing disappointment.

Nunnelee said he immediately e-mailed back, explaining how the bill had been changed.

The parent e-mailed back, saying he would have voted the same as Nunnelee.

“I could have responded through the mail and gotten the same result but for 10 days that group of parents would have gone to church, the PTA … talking about how sorry Nunnelee was. But as it turned out that lasted only 10 minutes,” Nunnelee said.
