A proposal to help transform Mississippi communities into entertainment meccas creating scores of jobs and increasing tourism has the support of lawmakers and local economic development leaders.
State Rep. Greg Snowden, R-Meridian, plans to introduce legislation allowing communities to create entertainment districts and provide tax incentives for businesses that open in the designated districts.
“If we’re known for anything, it’s for the quality of our entertainment,” Snowden said. “Those are good dollars, if you can get people to come in from outside the area. It’s a magnet for job creation and economic development.”
The proposal has sparked interest throughout the state, including Meridian, Tupelo and Jackson.
Supporters say such legislation would give cities and counties the chance to entice developers to build a variety of venues unique to a region. For example, creating blues clubs in the Delta.
