MDOT gets list of major road projects compiled

Mississippi has 75 highway projects just waiting for President-elect Barack Obama’s stimulus package to pass Congress next year.

The state’s wish list totals $600 million, according to a recent American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials survey.

Obama has made spending on public works projects a key element of his plan to revive the moribund economy. In a Saturday radio address to the nation, Obama said he wants to “create millions of jobs by making the single largest new investment in our national infrastructure since the creation of the federal highway system in the 1950s.” He did not put a figure on it, but says it will be costly.

The highway survey lists 5,000 projects costing $64 billion across the nation that are ready if legislation is passed. Of those, about 3,000 projects worth $18 billion could be under contract within 90 days.
