Having extra time to prepare has been helpful for the LSU football team in its bowl games under Les Miles, and the Tigers are hoping that factor will be true again as they get set for Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense.
LSU (7-5) plays No. 14 Georgia Tech (9-3) at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 31 in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta.
The common thread in LSU’s first three bowls under Les Miles is how decisive LSU’s victories have been — 40-3 over Miami in the Peach Bowl in his first season, 2005, and then 41-14 over Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl and 38-24 over Ohio State in the BCS title game a year ago.
“Looking at it from a historical standpoint, with LSU, once we get a break off and really get a chance to study our opponent we always play well,” defensive tackle Marlon Favorite said. “Having a month’s time to watch film … is going to help us a great deal.”
The extra time allows for LSU to get healthy — and Miles won’t disclose if the Tigers have any injuries, so it’s possible they’re already healthy — and to better study an opponent.
“You have plenty of time to prepare and relax,” linebacker Darry Beckwith said. “You’re not ripping and running like on another game week, on a fast pace, a fast mode. We have time to sit down and discuss things and just really get a feel for their offense.”
That extra time could be an intangible helping an LSU defense that has struggled throughout the season.
During a regular season, Georgia Tech’s opponents have often had just the game week to prep for an offense not usually seen in the college football landscape anymore.
