Millsaps beat by Washington & Jefferson 35-20
Senior running back Curt Jones rushed for a career-high 208 yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries and senior teammate Bobby Swallow completed 22-of-31 passes for 246 yards, as 19th-ranked Washington & Jefferson outscored Millsaps 21-3 in the second half to upset the 3rd-ranked Majors 35-20 and advance to the South Region Finals next weekend at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
In a game that featured two of the 10 national finalists for the 2008 Gagliardi Trophy in W&J’s Swallow and Millsaps’ Juan Joseph, both quarterbacks had outstanding afternoons and made strong cases for their spot in the elite company of the nation’s top Division III college football player.
W&J (11-1) became the first team to outgain Millsaps all year, 481-416, and the first in 23 games to hold them to 20 points or less dating back to a Nov. 18, 2006 loss at No. 24 Carnegie Mellon 21-0 in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs. A 36:18 to 23:42 advantage in time of possession was also a key factor in the game, with the W&J offense on the field it seemed the entire game.
