Medicaid: Showdown finally comes in January

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 24, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 11/24/8

The public has heard “The sky is falling!” so many times over Medicaid, it could very well tune it out, but a showdown really is looming in January.

Again shadowed, somewhat, by the dismal tax collections from the nation’s economic downturn, the perennial shortfall in the state’s portion of the federal-state program that provides health care for about one quarter of Mississippians looms again.

In fact, it has never gone away, although Gov. Haley Barbour and the Legislature have been battling over it for years.

Many may have forgotten but Mississippi faced a crisis in Medicaid funding that had protesters so irate early on with the newly elected Barbour regarding his cost-cutting measures, he was written off by no small number as a one-term governor.
