Congress: State delegation evolving

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 24, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 11/23/8

What’s congressional seniority worth to Mississippi?

The state’s history shows that Mississippi’s congressional delegation has maintained its strength based on the wisdom the voters have shown in finding senators or congressmen they trusted and sticking with them.

With Democrats controlling the White House and both houses of Congress, the role of Thompson and Taylor in statewide affairs will have to become more pronounced in a hurry. The respect Cochran engenders on both sides of the aisle will help, but Wicker will need to expand the scope of his influence in the Senate quickly, too.

From the standpoint of both partisan control and seniority, Mississippi is in a precarious position on Capitol Hill as the new Congress takes shape.
