Mississippi votes for McCain

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 5, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 11/5/8

While a number of formerly Republican states shifted to support President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday, Mississippi remained deeply red, along with much of the South.

“The state of Mississippi bucked the trend maybe, but conservatism is alive and well in Mississippi,” said Brad White, president of the Mississippi Republican Party.

County-level returns showed Mississippians voted along racial lines, with heavily black counties in the Mississippi Delta voting overwhelmingly for Obama. But east Mississippi, where black voters were greatly outnumbered, went to Sen. John McCain by large margins.
