Fulmer’s tenure good, but not good enough
The guy just played for the SEC championship.
After a 3-6 start and with the team needing to desperately scramble just to get to a bowl game, 58-year-old Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer has decided to step down at the end of this season after 17 years as the head man of one of college football’s premier programs. On his resume will be two SEC championships, five SEC title-game appearances, and a 1998 national title.
With three games left to play, his record is an impressive 150-51, but if the Vols don’t beat Wyoming, Vanderbilt and Kentucky, this will be the school’s second losing season in four years and at best, the hope is for a mediocre bowl bid at a place where mediocre bowl bids are accepted as readily as a Bear Bryant houndstooth hat.
