Head-to-head: Don’t count out the Bowdens
There was one Bowden left among college football head coaches Tuesday. Raise your hand if you thought the old man would win this derby.
The family patriarch, and maybe the living patriarch of college football outside Pennsylvania, has outlasted his three boys in the business. Tommy Bowden leaving Clemson on Monday placed him with former Florida State offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden and former Auburn coach Terry Bowden in the coaching unemployment line. And the prevailing sense is that Papa will rise after his team gets drilled by Florida again, recognize his program’s losing on the field and with academic issues off it, and pass the Florida State flaming spear to appointed successor Jimbo Fisher.
End scene.
