Auburn fires offensive coordinator Tony Franklin at midseason
AUBURN — Less than 24 hours after declaring that it would be a “major disaster” to make a mid-season offensive change, Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville made a stunning reversal, firing offensive coordinator Tony Franklin only six games into his first full season.
Tuberville said he would talk more today about how he would organize the team’s offensive coaching duties for the rest of the season and whether he would hire an additional coach from outside the program to replace Franklin.
Franklin talked to reporters briefly as he cleaned out his office, but said he would have no further comment until at least today.
“My responsibility is to this football team and it always will be,” Tuberville said during a post-practice press conference that was cut off after only five minutes. “Basically what it all comes down to is production, and I didn’t think the last few weeks we were making any progress.”
