In a motion filed Monday in federal court, Michael Recio, a former bodyguard for Jackson Mayor Frank Melton, said the mayor and fellow bodyguard Marcus Wright would testify for him if he’s tried separately from them.
The motion for a separate trial for Recio was one of a flurry of filings before a motions deadline for the trio’s Nov. 12 federal trial on civil rights violations charges.
Cynthia Stewart, Recio’s attorney, said in the motion that Melton and Wright have “mutually antagonistic defenses” to the federal charges related to damage caused to a northwest Jackson duplex two years ago.
The motion states Melton and Wright would refuse to testify on Recio’s behalf if they are tried together.
