Mississippi Deserves Its Moment In the Sun
It is not just Ole Miss that Mississippi wants to show off in the debate. It is the positive life and the heritage of the state. Advertising and Promotions Director for Mississippi Tourism Authority Sandy Bynum proudly told me that Mississippi has a “Blues Trail” to honor the birthplace of the American Blues with over one hundred sites. — So far 52 have been dedicated, and two more will be dedicated this week.
The post-Katrina center that I helped start is named after the Governor Haley Barbour’s wife, Marsha Barbour, who worked hard delivering supplies to all kinds of neighborhoods after the storm. The Marsha Barbour Center had over three hundred people working to build a Kaboom playground. It was the most integrated group you could possibly imagine– black, white, young, old, men, women, Democrats and Republicans. Most of us would be hard pressed to find such a group in Boston or New York City.
Mississippi has changed since 1962 and the people of the Magnolia State deserve to have the world see those massive changes that have occurred.
