Spread offense as popular as ever in college

Last week during halftime of the Michigan-Notre Dame game, we had a spirited discussion about the origin of the spread offense. Many Wolverine fans believe that current head coach Rich Rodriguez invented the spread since he was so successful with it at West Virginia.

I went to Wikipedia for the definitive answer to several questions, and found that Glenn “Tiger” Ellison is given credit for inventing the original Run & Shoot offense that has evolved into today’s spread. Ellison wanted to spread out the defenses by forcing them to cover the receivers. This would give an advantage to the running game. Darrel “Mouse” Davis took the spread and turned it into a pass-first attack. Today’s version incorporates the best of both worlds as teams with the most success strive for quality production with the run or pass.
