Imprisoned attorney Zach Scruggs says the Mississippi Supreme Court erred in ruling that he is “permanently disbarred” from practicing law.
Scruggs is serving a 14-month sentence for knowing about the bribery scheme that toppled his father, Richard “Dickie” Scruggs.
Scruggs says Mississippi Bar rules “do not provide for permanent disbarment.”
Still, the phrase was incorporated into U.S. District Court documents about his privilege to practice law in federal court.
Scruggs is asking a U.S. District Court to stay the disbarment of his federal license while the Mississippi court considers his request for clarification.
A judge did not immediately rule on the matter.
