One of Mayor Frank Melton’s former bodyguards has hired a new lawyer to represent him in his federal trial, according to a court document filed Friday.
Michael Recio, a Jackson Police Department detective, has hired Cynthia Stewart of Madison.
Melton and his ex-bodyguards, Jackson police Detective Marcus Wright and Recio, were indicted in July on federal charges related to the damage of a duplex on Ridgeway Street. The duplex was damaged on Aug. 26, 2006, during a police-style raid.
They were indicted on two alleged civil rights violations and a gun charge. The two officers are on paid leave pending the outcome of their trial.
