Week 1 not upsetting for college football powers
The way the 2007 college football season left the rails and kept on going all willy-nilly every week, we weren’t sure the 2008 season would know how to proceed.
But this one left the station Saturday with a sense of sanity and a strong measure of order that harkens to a more relaxed era — a time when good folks were safe in their expectations and comfortable in their point spreads.
Except in Ann Arbor, anyway.
Folks in the Big House can’t seem to shake themselves awake from a nightmare that left them wondering in the night — did they really run off their own leader and leave behind a good deal of their traditions … for this? What have we done?
While the Georgias, Ohio States, USCs, Oklahomas, and even the Alabamas and the like, were back to chugging along, posting big victories and solidifying their standing at the top of the polls, Michigan was just plain lucky to lose to Utah by only a couple of points. The Utes dominated every phase at Michigan for almost the whole game Saturday before succumbing to some of the pressures that go with playing on the biggest stages, and then hanging on for the 25-23 victory over the first Big Blue team of Rich Rodriguez.
